The Nicolet/Oconto Retired Teachers Association and its parent organization, the Wisconsin Retired Educators’ Association, congratulate Michael Lafave for being selected by his peers for the honor of Educator of Excellence for the 2015-2016 school year at Lena Public Schools.

Lafave was recently awarded a certificate from the Department of Public Instruction and a gift certificate from NORTA encouraging him to continue in his outstanding fashion and encourage others to do the same.

A native of Florence, Lafave attended Marinette Teachers College and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. When he first started teaching at Lena in 1966, he worked at Sunny Brook, a country school where he not only taught students but also kept the school heated and clean.

From there, he moved into the village of Lena and taught middle school science and math. It was at the school that he met his wife, Sue, who was the business education instructor. They have two children, Amanda and Adam.

Lafave completed his 50th year of teaching at Lena. To recognize that milestone in the fall, he rode a fire truck to school on the first day.

Lafave lives in Lena and enjoys gardening, walking, biking, being a referee for basketball and volunteering for the fire department and as an emergency medical technician.
