Morris, Rathsack tally scores under 100

Vince Norling posted a round of 91 as Oconto Falls finished 14th Saturday at the Seymour Invitational at Crystal Springs Golf Course.

Norling shot a 44 on the front nine and a 47 on the back nine, with his largest scores coming on back-to-back holes, No. 18 and No. 1.

“Vince’s short game was helping him on Saturday. He was able to stay away from bigger numbers by getting up and down and not three-putting,” Oconto Falls head coach Scott Schroeder said. “Vince has a great attitude and demeanor, which allows him to stay focused on the controllables.”

Oconto Falls posted a 393, with Ryan Morris (93), Clayton Rathsack (99) and Odin Halvorsen (110) rounding out the scoring.

Bay Port won the invitational with a 314, followed by Winneconne (318). De Pere’s Tyler Trupke was the medalist with a 75.

Rathsack, a freshman, posted two sevens and an eight on the back nine for his score of 51 there. On the front nine, his 48 was just four strokes off the pace set by Norling.

“Clayton’s not necessarily thrilled with a score of 99, but if he keeps learning how to miss and where to miss, his scorecard will start to look cleaner and he will be able to be in better position to score,” Schroeder said.

In the team’s first 18-hole competition of the season, Morris was consistent, dropping one shot to Norling on each the front and back nine.

The Panthers team competed with just four golfers. The 15-team competition gave them a glimpse of what might be ahead in conference play and regionals, but it also might have distracted the young Panthers.

“We were fortunate to play with some better teams in the area with experienced golfers,” Schroeder said. “And sometimes that can take away from playing your own game.”
