An Athens company was the low bidder to build no-blue sky shooting sheds at the Machickanee Shooting Range.

The Oconto County Board voted unanimously Thursday to award the contract to Athens Lumber LLC for $61,960.

The sheds “prevent the shooters at the range from seeing the horizon,” Supervisor Al Stranz said. “That was one of the problems before; they were shooting way above the backstop. This will prevent them from seeing beyond the backstop, so all you’ll be able to see out of the sheds will be the backstop.”

The no-blue sky design is standard practice at developed shooting ranges, Stranz said.

The funds will come from public shooting range grants the county received for the project, of which the county pays 25 percent, said Kevin Hamann, county administrative coordinator.

The project, which also includes landscaping, telephone lines for security cameras and benches, came out to about $180,000 with about $23,476 left unspent, he said.
