Steven R. Van Haren

Steven R. Van Haren, 62, Gillett, died peacefully on Saturday evening, July 1, 2017, surrounded by his family at a Green Bay hospital following complications from a stroke he suffered in February. The sixth of 12 boys was born on Jan. 15, 1955, in Oconto Falls to Clarence and Gladys “Tiny” (VandenBush) Van Haren.

Steve attended St. Anthony Catholic Parochial School and graduated from Oconto Falls High School with the Class of 1973.

Steve lived most of his life in Oconto County, where he was employed at Carver Boat in Pulaski for 36 years and most recently Diversified Woodcraft in Suring. He will be fondly remembered for his love of racing, hunting, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Steve enjoyed being in the woods and looking for signs of deer or turkey, and when he wasn’t, you could find him working on his son Josh’s race car. In 2003 he married Laurie Gonion, and they loved just being together and making many special memories.

“Papa Steve,” as he was lovingly known by his grandchildren, taught them about many important things in life with his kind heart, helping hands and warm words.

Survivors are his wife, Laurie Van Haren; five children, Steve (Mary), Rebecca (Rob), Mellissa (Paul), Robert and Josh (Ashley); an adopted son, Kyle Frederick; grandchildren, Mikey, Nathan, Natasha, Natalee, Kaylee, Kyler, Kayahna, Ashton, Skylar, Willie, Wyatt, Brentlee and Madyson; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Lilly, Laila, Aubree and Brynlee; 11 brothers, Nick (Sandi), Mike (Danni), Bill (Dawn), Richard, Jerry (Debbie), Tom (Lisa), Bruce (Karen), Eugene (Vicki), Tim (Callie), Jessie and Pat (Nancy); his in-laws, Mike Gonion and Elizabeth Solberg; two brothers-in-law, Jim and Kevin (Tammy) Gonion; his black lab buddy, T-Bone; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Tyffany Stevens; and mother-in-law, Vanessa Gonion.

Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, July 7, 2017, at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls, and after 8 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls until the time of service. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Joel Sember officiating. Cremation was to follow.

The Van Haren family would like to thank the nurses and staffs of Woodlands Nursing Home, Aurora ICU & Hospice, as well as the many family members and friends who have been of so much comfort to Steve and his family. A special thanks to Kelly Frederick, Jenny Dirks, Dani and Rodney.
