“Putnam County Spelling Bee” musical opens Sept. 15

Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. invites the community to its fall show, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

The show is presented through an arrangement with After Dark Productions, established as a division of Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. to bring edgier material to the stage. Due to adult themes and language, the show is rated PG-13 and is suitable for mature audiences only.

Winner of the Tony and Drama Desk awards, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” has charmed audiences across the country with its wit and humor. It is based a book by Rachel Sheinkin and features a score by William Finn.

“If you really want to get away and remember what it was like to be kid, this will allow you to go back in time and put yourself back into a spelling bee,” director Kari Devine said.

She said the musical provides a great afternoon or night out for adults looking for high quality and highly enjoyable live entertainment.

According to Devine, audience participation makes the show special, as do the performers, who hail from Oshkosh, the Fox Cities, Green Bay, Oconto and the Abrams area.

“We’ve drawn people from throughout Northeast Wisconsin, and they all bring a lot of talent with their singing and acting,” Devine said.

Performing in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” are Dan Terrio, Abby Frank, Paige Stapleton, Ali Carlson, Preston Pelegrin, Nicholas Lamers, Hayden Blau, Brittney Baldwin and Aaron Klein.

Opening night is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15. The audience is invited to enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks with the cast and crew after the performance.

Performances also are scheduled at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16 and 23, and 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17 and 24. All shows will be performed at the Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams.

Tickets are $14 for adults and $12 for seniors (65 and older) and youth (under 17).
