This letter is submitted on behalf of the Wisconsin Dental Association and its more than 3,000 member dentists and dental hygienists statewide who are committed to quality oral health care.

It has come to our attention that Oconto Falls is discontinuing fluoridating its local water system. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have proclaimed fluoridation one of the most significant public health advances of the 20th century and one of the safest, most cost-effective ways to improve overall oral health.

We regret the numerous inaccuracies reported in a local television report. Neither dental health experts nor the WDA were contacted for comment. The facts are as follow:

– Community water fluoridation is safe. It’s the same as adding vitamin D to milk.

– Community water fluoridation is effective. Drinking fluoridated water reduces tooth decay over a lifetime by 25 percent.

– Community water fluoridation is economical. The estimated return on investment ranges from $4 per person in communities of 5,000 or less to $27 per person in communities of 200,000 or more.

On behalf of all the adults and children living in Oconto Falls, the WDA urges local officials to reinstate the addition of fluoride to the municipal water system.
