Sophomore Autumn Canavera ran a personal-best time of 21 minutes, 35.8 seconds to place 18th as the Oconto Falls girls placed ninth out of 13 schools in the large division at the Jim Bremser Invitational in Mishicot on Sept. 12.

Directly behind Canavera was teammate Breanna Sadowski, who shook off an injury to take 19th in 21:40.4.

“I wanted to stay with her,” Canavera said. “She was suffering from the heat, so the best I could do was just keep up with her.”

Canavera competed at Mishicot last season and knew it was a flat, quick course. She took advantage of that.

“My coach has a number on my hand, so I can see my second mile, and that really helps me,” Canavera said. “I just try to finish most of the time, that’s my goal.”

Grace Williams was the third finisher for Oconto Falls, placing 56th in the large division in 24:26.2. Three sophomores followed for the Panthers: Ericka Havemeier (73rd, 26:14.3); Morgan Helmle (77th, 26:43.4); and Morgan Van Haren (81st, 28:08.4).

“I’ve been stressing all year to all of them, ‘Just get a faster time. Get better each week,’” coach Lon Ludemann said. “They did that. I think all of them did, actually.”

Freedom won the division (37 points), followed by De Pere (69), Kiel (100), Luxemburg-Casco (120) and Two Rivers (175). Oconto Falls finished with 243 points.

“They should be happy,” Ludemann said. “I think we did pretty good.”
