The announcement, “The sheriff is in town,” may have struck fear but more likely friendship into the minds of the folk of the Suring area in the past 70 years. While in conversation on the recent passing of former Sheriff Gerald Gehling, members of the Suring Area Historical Society realized that since 1950 the Suring area has had seven out of the last 11 sheriffs of Oconto County.

The Society wants to have a display area dedicated to these sheriffs at its museum, 639 Main St., which is scheduled for a grand opening May 5-6. If anyone has pictures or comments about these men, it would be appreciated if they could send them to SAHS, P.O. Box 85, Suring, WI 54174 or contact Duane Wardecke at 920-842-4085.

The following is a list of the Suring area sheriffs, their time of service and their residence:

• Joseph J. Foral, 1951-1955, town of Breed

• Robert Schoenebeck, 1961-1962, town of Bagley

• Rupert Haave, 1965-1969, village of Suring

• John Fisher, 1969-1973, Klaus Lake

• Gerald Gehling, 1975-1987, village of Suring

• Douglas McMahon, 1995-2003, town of Maple Valley

• Michael Jansen, 1995-present, village of Suring
