Gillett Handiworks will once again be taking part in the cause of Click for Babies, a public education campaign organized by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome (NCSBS) in partnership with hospitals, public health and child abuse prevention groups to create awareness of the leading trigger for infant abuse – frustration with infant crying.
The crying done by newborns is referred to as the Period of Purple Crying. It is referred to as a “period” to show that the time frame does have a beginning and an end.
Purple is used as an acronym: P, peak of crying at 2 months; U, unexpected; R, resists soothing; P, pain like face; L, long lasting; and E, evening.
Click for Babies got its name from the clicking sounds that knitting needles and crochet hooks make when they are being used for projects. Program materials that talk about crying are given to parents and caregivers to teach about the Period of Purple Crying, and coping suggestions and Purple Hats are given to the newborns to remind the parents and caregivers of what they learned in the materials.
From now until the end of September, Gillett Handiworks will be collecting newborn hats for Click for Babies. They can be knit or crocheted, but they must be at least 50 percent purple in any shade, fit a newborn’s head, and there cannot be any choking hazards like buttons, ties, pom-poms, etc.
Like last year, Gillett Handiworks will offer a 20 percent discount on purple yarn for those who would like to make hats for this cause. There will also be patterns available here at the store, and the store will include links to other patterns on the Facebook page and our store’s website.
