The Oconto County Board is doubling its commitment to the Oconto County Youth Fair, at least for one year.

Supervisors Thursday unanimously approved an additional $10,000 to cover additional expenses for the fair, which is scheduled for Aug. 15-18 in Gillett.

Administrative Coordinator Kevin Hamann said the expenses came up during the fair board’s annual report to the Extension Education Committee earlier this month.

“During that discussion it was talked about some additional costs that are going to be incurred, such as a new scale, some other costs,” Hamann said. “This would just be for ’19, any increase for ’20 would have to go through the budget process.”

Supervisor Richard Nelson said the Fair Board needs to rewire the barns to take care of all the fans that are being installed to keep the cattle cool.

“When they get done, that $10,000 will be well spent,” Nelson said. “And we haven’t helped the youth for quite a few years, only $10,000 – I think it was time that we increase it to more.”

Supervisor Dick Doeren added that every county fair now has to have its own scale.

“They can’t bring a portable scale anymore,” Doeren said.
