Athlete of the Week: Sam Lemens

Hard work pays off for Gillett/Suring senior

Gillett/Suring senior Sam Lemens will end his high school wrestling career competing in the 76th annual WIAA Individual Wrestling Championship Tournament.

Reaching state in any sport is typically a feat that can only be accomplished with years upon years of hard work and dedication. For Sam Lemens, who attends Gillett High School and wrestles for the Gillett/Suring co-op, that was certainly the case.

Lemens biggest goal was to reach state, and after a standout senior season on the mat, he achieved that feat by placing third at the Division 3 Bonduel Sectional on Saturday. Sporting a 35-7 season record, Lemens will now try to cap his high school career by reaching the state podium.

Q: When did your interest in wrestling begin?

A: My interest in wrestling started in fifth grade.

Q: What’s your favorite part about a wrestling match or the wrestling season?

A: My favorite part of wrestling are the results you get after putting in a lot of time and hard work. I have built a lot of great relationships through wrestling as well.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Gillett/Suring wrestling team?

A: My favorite memory in wrestling is when I won the third place match at sectionals (Saturday) and seeing all of my friends and family in the stands cheering me on.

Q: What serves as your motivation while on the mat?

A: My motivation in matches was to always keep working hard to achieve my goal of going to state.

Q: What are you going to miss most about high school wrestling?

A: The part of high school wrestling that I will miss the most are all of the emotions involved in it and seeing people come together to support me.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not in school or competing in a high school sport?

A: My favorite activity outside of school is hunting and spending time in the outdoors.

Q: Favorite TV show, movie and musical artist?

A: TV show, “Spongebob Squarepants.” Movie, “Forrest Gump.” Musical artist, Johnny Cash.

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: My favorite food is Funyuns.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

A: That you get out of it what you put in.
