Not too late to apply for heating assistance

There is still time to apply for the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program in Oconto County. The county Health and Human Services Department will be taking applications until May 15.

Heating/electric assistance is a one-time benefit payment per heating season (Oct. 1 through May 15). It is intended to help pay a portion of a household’s heating costs, not the entire annual cost of heating a home.

Generally, the program counts household income from the three months prior to the month you apply. In addition to the regular benefit, the office may be able to help with outstanding bills or to avoid disconnection of services.

For example, a two-person household with a three-month income of $8,983.75 or less is eligible for home heating assistance, as is a family of four that made $13,211.50 over the past three months.

Applications can be completed by appointment only; no walk-ins. To schedule an appointment, call Jill at 920-834-7055. Regular office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Special arrangements can be made if a client needs an after-hours appointment.
