Oconto Falls junior starts new track season with 2 first places

Athlete: Ericka Havemeier

Sport: Girls track and field

School: Oconto Falls High School

Year: Junior

Hoping to make it back to state for a third straight year, Oconto Falls junior Ericka Havemeier got her season off to a strong start while competing at an indoor home track meet on March 18. Havemeier placed first in the 45- and 200-meter dashes.

Havemeier posted a time of 5.9 seconds in the 45, while earning a mark of 29.1 in the 200. She won the 45 by about 0.2 seconds, while finishing about 2.0 seconds faster than any other 200 runner.

Q: When did your interest in track and field begin?

A: I’ve been trying to race everything and everyone for as long as I can remember. I used to race my dad’s truck just to see how fast I could go. So when I got to middle school, I had my heart set on being part of the team.

Q: What’s your favorite part about a track and field meet or the track and field season?

A: My favorite part about the track and field season is looking back at the end on all the things accomplished and all the memories made.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Oconto Falls track and field team?

A: My favorite part is definitely the people. We can get our work done but still have a lot of fun doing it.

Q: What serves as your motivation while competing?

A: I set high expectations for myself. Every race I don’t do as good as I would have liked motivates me to do better at the next.

Q: Talk a bit about the work you did in the offseason to get ready for the season?

A: From December until the end of February, I attended Synergy Track and Field Academy. I worked on my blocks and improved some of my running form.

Q: What kind of things are you going to be focusing on early in the season?

A: Early in the season, I’ve been focusing on good starts, good form, and good handoffs. The more I work on these early in the season, the better off I will be later.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not in school or competing in a high school sport?

A: I really enjoy being outside — hunting, fishing, swimming, pretty much anything outside. I also like spending time with my family and friends.

Q: Favorite TV show, movie and musical artist?

A: I don’t really have a favorite of anything, but I can tell you I listen to country music and I’ll probably watch any type of movie. Favorite TV show is “CSI.”

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: I eat a Snickers before every track meet, sometimes before every race.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

A: On a track related note, the best advice I’ve received is “run fast.” My family tells me this all the time.
