Local high school baseball teams learn playoff seeds, matchups

Local baseball teams recently discovered what teams they would first be facing in the postseason when the WIAA released playoff brackets.

Oconto Falls earned a No. 5 seed in Division 2. The Panthers will open the postseason against a familiar foe, taking on fourth-seeded Marinette, a North Eastern Conference opponent, on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in a regional quarterfinal.

Should Oconto Falls pull the road upset, it will earn a spot in a regional semifinal against top-seeded Seymour on Tuesday, May 28.

The Panthers split with Marinette this season, winning 7-1 in Marinette on May 6 but losing 3-1 to the Marines the following day in Oconto Falls.

The Gillett/Suring co-op snagged a No. 8 seed in the postseason. The co-op with travel to take on top-seeded Peshtigo on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in a Division 3 regional quarterfinal.

If Gillett/Suring can pull the upset, it would either play at fourth-seeded Oconto or fifth-seeded Northland Pines in a regional semifinal matchup on May 28.

Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy was handed a No. 7 seed. The co-op will travel to take on the Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran/Providence co-op on Thursday in a Division 4 regional quarterfinal.

If Lena/STAA can earn a road win Thursday, it would either travel to take on third-seeded Gibraltar/Washington Island or sixth-seeded Gresham on May 28 for a regional semifinal.
