The Oconto River Watershed Chapter of Trout Unlimited partnered with the Breed Sportsman’s Club, Oconto County Sportsman’s Alliance, Suring Sportsman’s Club, and Underhill Sportsman’s Club and Kelly Lake Sportsmen’s Club to fund trout stocking in the main Oconto River from Pulcifer to Suring.

Stocking was completed by Silver Moon Hatchery with a permit granted by fisheries biologist Tammie Paoli of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Peshtigo.

The permit is for stocking trout in Class 2 area of the Oconto River at public landings, which was delayed till mid-May due to the high water this spring. The fish, rainbow and brown trout (10-14 inches) were scattered at the landings in Suring, Hintz, Underhill and Pulcifer. Funding for this project totaled $3,600.

The Trout Unlimited chapter is sponsoring a summer fishing contest open to all men, woman and youth who would like to join in the fun of competition. Fish will be judged by length only and will be measured at The Bull Pen in Pulcifer or Old Smashin’s in Suring.

The contest has 10 categories: brown, brook and rainbow trout, largemouth and smallmouth Bass, crappie, bluegill/sun fish, northern pike, perch and walleye. Fish from any inland lake or stream are eligible. The contest will run through Sept. 30. All names on registration chart will be entered in a drawing with a chance to win a gift card at the chapter’s Oct. 1 meeting.
