Thanks to a grant and the efforts of a local Eagle Scout troop, the Gillett Library’s outdoor Community Square space has a new feature — an outdoor checkerboard.

Local Eagle Scout Heath Piaskowski coordinated the construction of this project, and the work was completed over Father’s Day weekend. Families and groups who use the Community Center can check out the giant set of checkers using their library card, and the game will also be available for all to play at the library’s weekly Downtown Market from 4-6 p.m. most Thursdays during the summer.

A grant from the Little Rapids Corp. helped pay for the checkerboard and the new pergola nearby, where kids in the Summer Reading Program meet when the weather cooperates, said Kay Rankel, library director. Leftover grant money will be used to landscape the area around the checkerboard and pergola, creating a small courtyard to complement the Community Square.

The library hopes to have all the work completed by mid-summer, Rankel said.
