Donald E. Gutt

Donald (Don) Edward Gutt, 92, of Shawano, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, in Green Bay.

Don was born in the Town of Almon, Shawano County, on May 31, 1927, to the late Paul and Viola (Dahlke) Gutt. Don was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bowler. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Regina, Wisconsin, and graduated from Bowler High School in 1944.

Following high school, Don worked on the family farm with his father until 1947 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was in active service for over four years, serving two years at Pearl Harbor and two years stateside. Following active service, Don remained in the USMC Reserves for five years and was honorably discharged with the rank of technical sergeant.

Don was united in marriage to Louise Warren in Jacksonville, North Carolina, in 1952. Don started his 40-year career at Badger Breeders in 1950 where he held several positions starting as a cashier supervisor, getting promoted as the small cooperative grew, and retiring as the human resources manager at Cooperative Resources International.

Don was a 68-year member of the American Legion Post 117 where he served in several roles to include commander, county commander, and eighth district commander. He was an active, long time member of St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano where he participated on various boards to include the board of evangelism, board of trustees, parent teacher league, and trust fund committee.

In his free time, Don enjoyed many activities including golfing, cultivating an enviable yard and garden; and participating in many civic roles. He served as city councilman for five years, the last year as council president; seven years on the Shawano Municipal Utilities board; and chairman of the Shawano County Veterans Service Committee for 62 years.

Don is survived by two daughters, Donna Lou (Scott) Biebel, of Green Bay, and Lisa Lin Gutt of Falls Church, Virginia; two grandchildren, William (Miranda Mielke) Biebel and Mallory (Dennis) Kinchen; and four great-grandchildren, Zander, Olivia, Sawyer and Cora Lou Kinchen.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Louise; his parents; his sister, Gertrude Solberg; his brother, Victor Gutt; and three brothers-in-law.

A memorial service will be held for Don at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019, at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano with the Rev. Mark Drengler officiating. Shawano American Legion Post 117 will conduct military honors. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
